What We Know -and Don't Know-About Peptides

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that act as signaling molecules in the
body. They regulate many biological processes—everything from healing and
metabolism to hormone balance and sleep. Because of this wide range of
effects, peptide therapy has become one of the most exciting frontiers in
modern functional and regenerative medicine.
That said, there’s a lot of information—and misinformation—circulating
online. Here’s what the science (and clinical experience) actually tells us.

1. Regulatory Status and Research
Most peptides currently in clinical or wellness use are not approved by the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
That does not automatically mean they are unsafe. Many compounds used
every day—such as over-the-counter supplements, vitamins, and herbal
products—are also not FDA regulated.
The reality is that long-term, large-scale studies on peptide therapy are still
limited. Much of what we know comes from smaller human trials, animal
studies, and clinical experience. As research expands, we’ll gain a clearer
picture of which peptides are most effective and safest for specific goals.

2. Quality and Sourcing Matter Most
The source and purity of a peptide are the single most important determinants
of both safety and effectiveness.
Because the peptide market is not tightly regulated, online vendors and
discount suppliers often sell products that vary in concentration, sterility, and
potency. Extremely low prices should be a major red flag—they often indicate
poor-quality or counterfeit compounds.
At our clinic, we source all peptides exclusively from Alpha Biomed in
California.
-
Manufactured in the United States
-
Tested for ≥ 99% purity
-
Verified through both internal quality control and independent third-party
laboratories

This ensures consistency, safety, and clinical reliability for every formulation
used in your treatment plan.

3. Do Peptides Increase Cancer Risk?
Short answer: No, peptides have not been shown to increase cancer risk.
However, certain peptides—particularly those that stimulate human growth
hormone (hGH) or insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1)—promote cell growth
and slow cell death.
Because of this, scientists have suggested a theoretical risk that they could
accelerate the growth of a cancer or tumor that already exists.
To date, no studies have demonstrated that peptide therapy causes cancer.
While people with naturally high GH or IGF-1 levels show slightly higher rates
of certain cancers, this represents association, not causation. (For example,
everyone who drinks water eventually dies—true, but not causal.)
One important exception: individuals with a personal history of cancer should
avoid peptides that affect growth pathways such as GH or IGF.
In rare cases, these compounds have been associated with secondary
neoplasms—new tumor formation in patients with prior cancers.
Fortunately, many peptides have no impact on growth factors, and some are
being studied for their potential anti-inflammatory or even anti-cancer
properties. We can tailor your therapy to focus on those safer, non-growth-
related options.

4. Clinical Applications and Personalized Use
Peptides encompass a wide range of therapeutic effects, extending far beyond
muscle growth or aesthetics. Ongoing research supports their potential roles
in:
Cognitive & Sleep Health — supporting deeper sleep, improved
mood, and sharper focus
Muscle & Tissue Repair — accelerating recovery, collagen
formation, and wound healing
Metabolic Support — improving fat metabolism and insulin
sensitivity
Immune & Inflammatory Balance — modulating immune
response and reducing inflammation
Sexual & Hormonal Wellness — enhancing libido, performance,
and hormonal balance
Because each peptide works through different biological pathways, therapy
should always be personalized—based on your health goals, lab results, and
medical history. Peptide therapy is not one-size-fits-all.

5. The Bottom Line
Peptide therapy sits at the intersection of traditional medicine and
regenerative science.
While many peptides are still awaiting formal FDA approval and long-term
data, responsible sourcing, evidence-based selection, and medical supervision
can make their use both safe and highly effective.
If you’re considering peptide therapy, start with an open conversation about
your goals, health history, and risk profile. Together, we can design a program
that maximizes benefit, minimizes risk, and supports your long-term well-
